Since there are so many different types of software that are used to operate this application, it is difficult to specify which outcomes students would be fulfilling as this would depend on the source and type of simulation and/or models.

In regard to using TLF, students could be assessed on their computer skils e.g. using the internet browser and navigating websites but most importantly would be engaging with a range of of different digital resources and learning objects which cater to many different subjects such as English, Mathematics, Science & Technology, Visual Arts and Human Society and Its Environment. Therefore, depending on which simulation/model they are using, students could be achieving a range of diferent outcomes in regard to these different Key Learning Areas.

Here is an example of how a simulation from ‘The Learning Federation’ website can be used in the classroom for Mathematics. This particular simulation is called ‘Cassowary Sanctuary’ and involves the user being taken to a wildlife park where they must help the park ranger use geometric shapes to form enclosures for sick and injured birds. It is based around the concept of fractions and is for Stage 1.

Outcomes and Indicators:

Fractions and Decimals NS1.4: Describes and models halves and quaters of objects and collections, occuring in everyday situations.

  • modeling and describing a half or a quarter of a whole object
  • using fraction notation for half (1/2) and quarter (1/4)

The presentation of the scene: Create an enclosure for the cassowary

Request for the learner to react

Request for the learner to react: Choose a shape for the enclosure

creating the enclosure

The learner reaction: Creating the enclosure by modeling the required fractions

Computer responds to the user's action- User continues to solve the problem

Computer responds to the users action: User has solved the problem by allocating birds to each section
